Use the words before and after the puzzle
Before solving, ask your child to circle unfamiliar words in the list. Afterward, choose three words to explain, draw, or use in a science sentence. Open the printable PDF below when you are ready.
What children can practice
- Identify producers, consumers, and decomposers in an ecosystem.
- Trace a simple path of energy that begins with sunlight.
- Explain that arrows in a food chain show the direction energy moves.
For parents and homeschool
Build a three-part food chain
Gather three small pieces of paper and draw a sun, a plant, and an animal.
- Step 1
Place the sun first, then the plant, then the animal.
- Step 2
Draw arrows from the sun to the plant and from the plant to the animal.
- Step 3
Ask your child to narrate where each living thing gets its energy and add a decomposer at the end.

A quick classroom adaptation
Use the puzzle as retrieval practice after an ecosystem lesson. Small groups can combine two food chains into a food web, label each organism by role, and explain one possible change to the web.
Questions to talk about
- Why does most ecosystem energy begin with the sun?
- Can one animal be part of more than one food chain?
- What work do decomposers do in an ecosystem?
