Grade 1 Sun, Moon, and Sky Word Search
Young children learn about the sky by noticing patterns over time. This printable introduces familiar words such as sun, moon, cloud, star, day, and night, then invites children to connect the vocabulary with safe observations.

Use the words before and after the puzzle
Before solving, ask your child to circle unfamiliar words in the list. Afterward, choose three words to explain, draw, or use in a science sentence. Open the printable PDF below when you are ready.
What children can practice
- Name common objects and features seen in the daytime or nighttime sky.
- Compare two sky observations using words or pictures.
- Recognize that the sky can look different at different times.
For parents and homeschool

Fold a sheet of paper in half and label the sides “earlier” and “later.”
- Step 1
Look through a window or go outside with an adult and draw what is visible in the sky.
- Step 2
Observe again several hours later and make a second drawing.
- Step 3
Circle one thing that stayed the same and one thing that changed.

A quick classroom adaptation
Use the puzzle before a weeklong sky journal. Build a class word wall from the worksheet, then sort observations into daytime, nighttime, and “can appear at both” categories.
Questions to talk about
- What did you notice in the sky today?
- What changed between the two observations?
- Which sky words describe something you have seen yourself?
