For parents and caregivers
What your child will practice
- Identify important plant structures and describe a basic function of each structure.
- Explain how roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds help a flowering plant survive and reproduce.
How to use this puzzle at home
- Look at a houseplant, garden plant, or clear plant picture and ask your child which word-bank parts are visible.
- Complete the word search, then read each definition and connect the term to its job in the plant.
- Draw a flowering plant, label at least six vocabulary words, and use arrows to show water moving from roots toward leaves.
What you need
- Printed worksheet or a PDF viewer
- Pencil, crayons, or colored pencils
- Optional houseplant, flower, or plant photograph

Body systems at a glance
Use these groups to connect individual vocabulary words to the larger jobs body systems perform together.
Support and transport
Roots, stems, leaves, and leaf veins help support the plant and move or use important materials.
Growth and reproduction
Buds and flower parts help the plant grow and reproduce, while fruits protect developing seeds.

Vocabulary guide
Use these short definitions before or after the word search. Ask your child to explain a few in their own words.
- Root
- A plant structure that usually anchors the plant and absorbs water and minerals from the soil.
- Stem
- A structure that supports leaves and flowers and transports water, minerals, and sugars through a plant.
- Leaf
- A plant organ that captures light and usually makes sugars through photosynthesis.
- Flower
- A reproductive plant structure that can produce seeds after pollination and fertilization.
- Fruit
- A mature plant structure that protects seeds and can help disperse them.
- Seed
- A structure containing a young plant, stored food, and a protective covering.
- Bud
- An undeveloped shoot, leaf, or flower that can grow into a new plant structure.
- Petal
- A flower part that is often colorful and can help attract pollinators.
- Pollen
- Tiny grains produced by flowering plants that carry male reproductive cells.
- Vein
- Transport tissue in a leaf that moves water, minerals, and sugars and also adds support.
Talk about the science
- How do roots, stems, veins, and leaves work together to move and use water?
- Why can a flower be important even though it may last for only a short time?
- How can a fruit help the seeds inside it reach a new place?
Quick check
Measurable exit ticket
Exit ticket: label four plant structures on a simple diagram and write one accurate sentence explaining how two of the structures work together. A complete response includes correct labels, functions, and a clear connection.

Extension activity
Carefully observe a real plant or a detailed photograph. Make a labeled scientific drawing with at least six vocabulary terms, record three observations, and write one question you could investigate about how a plant part works.
Teacher and tutor note
Classroom adaptation
After the word search, pairs label a plant diagram and sort the vocabulary into growth, transport, and reproduction roles. Each pair then explains one relationship between two structures using evidence from the definitions.
Differentiation and accommodations
Extra support
Preview five familiar terms with a real plant or labeled picture, then let the learner highlight each word before searching for it.
More challenge
Ask the learner to trace a drop of water from the root to a leaf and describe how flowers, fruits, and seeds support reproduction.
Access options
- Read the word bank and definitions aloud or allow text-to-speech support.
- Provide a larger print copy and allow the learner to use a ruler or guide strip across the grid.
- Accept oral explanations, speech-to-text, or a labeled drawing for the exit ticket.
Accessibility
The page provides the word bank, instructions, definitions, and learning prompts as selectable HTML text and supports browser zoom and keyboard navigation. The visual puzzle PDF is not currently tagged for screen readers, so provide a reader or use the HTML vocabulary guide when needed.
