Food Webs and Ecosystem Energy Word Search
Follow energy and matter through producers, consumers, and decomposers with precise definitions, an answer key, and a Grade 5 food-web model.
For parents and caregivers
What your child will practice
- Classify organisms as producers, consumers, or decomposers by how they obtain matter and energy.
- Interpret arrows in food chains and food webs as pathways of energy and matter transfer.
- Explain how decomposers return nutrients to an ecosystem while energy continues to flow.
How to use this puzzle at home
- Preview the definitions and ask your child to sort the organisms and roles into producers, consumers, and decomposers.
- Solve the puzzle, then draw an arrow between any two found words that can be connected in a food web.
- Choose a familiar meal and trace part of its matter and energy back to a producer and ultimately to sunlight.
- Use the answer key to check the puzzle, then have your child explain why a food web is more realistic than one food chain.

Vocabulary guide
Use these short definitions before or after the word search. Ask your child to explain a few in their own words.
- Ecosystem
- A community of organisms and the nonliving environment interacting in one place.
- Sunlight
- Radiant energy from the Sun that provides the starting energy for most food webs.
- Producer
- An organism, such as a plant or alga, that makes its own energy-rich food.
- Consumer
- An organism that gets matter and energy by eating other organisms.
- Decomposer
- An organism that breaks down dead material and wastes, returning nutrients to the environment.
- Herbivore
- A consumer that eats plants, algae, or other producers.
- Carnivore
- A consumer that gets food by eating other animals.
- Omnivore
- A consumer that eats both producers and other consumers.
- Predator
- An organism that hunts, catches, and eats another organism.
- Prey
- An organism that is hunted and eaten by a predator.
- Food chain
- A single sequence showing how matter and energy pass from one organism to another.
- Food web
- A model of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem.
- Energy
- The ability to cause change, transferred through an ecosystem when organisms eat.
- Matter
- Material that has mass and occupies space, including the substances organisms use to grow.
- Nutrient
- A substance an organism needs for growth, repair, and life processes.
- Fungi
- A group of organisms that includes many important decomposers, such as mushrooms and molds.
Talk about the science
- Why do arrows in a food web point from the food toward the organism that eats it?
- How do decomposers help matter continue to cycle through an ecosystem?
- What might happen to several populations if one producer became scarce?

Extension activity
Observe a nearby habitat or use a teacher-provided species list to build a food web with at least eight organisms. Label each role, draw arrows for transfers, and predict two effects of changing one population.
Teacher and tutor note
Classroom adaptation
Give each student an organism or ecosystem-role card after the puzzle. Use yarn to connect feeding relationships into a food web, require students to explain each arrow, and discuss how removing one population can affect several others.
