Natural Hazards and Solutions Word Search
Build Grade 2 vocabulary about natural hazards and engineering solutions with a printable word search and family safety planning.
For parents and caregivers
What your child will practice
- Identify natural hazards and describe how they can affect people, places, and living things.
- Explain that people use observations and data to prepare for hazards and reduce harm.
- Compare a simple engineering solution with the hazard it is designed to address.
How to use this puzzle at home
- Preview the word bank and explain that a hazard is a possible danger, not something that happens every day.
- Have your child solve the puzzle and match each hazard to one safe preparation or solution.
- With an adult, identify the household's trusted warning source and choose a safe meeting place.

Vocabulary guide
Use these short definitions before or after the word search. Ask your child to explain a few in their own words.
- Hazard
- A natural event or condition that could harm people, places, or living things.
- Earthquake
- A sudden shaking of the ground caused by movement in Earth's crust.
- Flood
- Water covering land that is usually dry after heavy rain or other events.
- Wildfire
- An uncontrolled fire that spreads through plants or other natural fuels.
- Storm
- A weather event with strong wind, rain, snow, lightning, or thunder.
- Drought
- A long time with much less rainfall than a place normally receives.
- Predict
- To use evidence and patterns to say what may happen in the future.
- Prepare
- To make a plan and gather what is needed before a possible hazard.
- Warning
- Information that tells people a hazardous event may happen or is happening.
- Barrier
- A structure that blocks or redirects moving water, wind, or other hazards.
- Solution
- An idea or design that helps solve a problem or reduce a hazard's effects.
- Engineer
- A person who uses science and design to solve problems and make useful things.
Talk about the science
- How could a warning help people prepare before a storm or flood arrives?
- What problem would a barrier solve during moving water, and what might it not solve?
- Why should engineers test and improve a design instead of assuming it will work?

Extension activity
Design a tabletop hazard solution with paper, blocks, or recycled materials. State the hazard, build one solution, test it safely, and draw a before-and-after picture showing how it reduces harm.
Teacher and tutor note
Classroom adaptation
Give groups hazard scenario cards and recycled building materials. After solving the puzzle, students identify the affected need, sketch a barrier or warning design, test it against a simple model, and revise using evidence.
